My husband is up to something new... again! He wrote a few songs inspired by The Jungle Book (the book not the movie). He convinced a handful of really talented musicians in KC to join him on this Literary Folk Rock journey. I got to come alongside, once again, as the "in house" graphic designer. First he wanted to come up with a logo for the band. Sort of inspired by Gayngs but a little more innocent. More like boy scouts. I love Aaron's creativity. I love how when he dreams, he dreams big and thinks of every detail! This is the logo we ended up with and some poster artwork I came up with for their first show. It's this Saturday at the Brick! I finally opened a storenvy store! It went live last week and I have loved watching emails pop up saying.. "You've made a sale!" It brings me so much joy to know that I can create things people love! I opened the store in hopes to make a little extra money to pay for our adoption, so the products offered are African and adoption inspired. I am blessed to have an amazing support system and a lot of the sales have been from friends and family. I hope that this can eventually go further than that. I guess we'll just have to see where it takes me.

ARTWORK FOR AARON'S NEW EP!

We had a lot of fun putting this Album art together. It's great working with Aaron because he knows what he wants and he has great ideas! The EP is called Ghostly and he wanted a very straight forward picture of himself in a white shirt and all white background. I was so inspired by that idea! So subtle and sophisticated. The challenge was to figure out a way to photograph him and make it look professional with my 6-year-old digital camera. Ha! I knew natural light was the key and with some experimenting we figured out he needed to have good light shining on his face and diffused light coming through behind him. So... I had an idea!! We have some great natural light that comes through our bathroom window in the afternoon AND we have a white shower curtain... perfect for diffusing light behind him and giving him a glowy white background. You would never guess that this photo was taken with me standing in the bathtub while Aaron awkwardly squats so that the top of the shower curtain doesn't show. ha!! After working with a lot of different directions we both thought this offset look was the way to go. Hope you like it and hope you get a copy of the EP. Out October 12th!

Most of you know, we started the adoption process about a month ago and Aaron and I have been brainstorming different ways to make a little extra money to help pay for the adoption. My husband wrote released a new single, "Got a lot to Give". If you purchase the song on his BandCamp site all proceeds go to REAL HOPE FOR HAITI, a rescue center that is intentional in its efforts to improve the quality of life for malnourished children in Haiti, especially in the current crisis.

You can pay what you want for the song, but know that whatever you give is helping so many desperate people in Haiti that really need all the help they can get!

My Aunt, Shanny is an amazingly talented Painter and Sculptor. A restaurant in Fredricksburg, Texas recently commissioned several pieces to hang in their space. The restaurant requested orchids, and orchids is what they got! One dozen BEAUTIFUL orchids. The way she captures light in these paintings gives these flowers such life! I love the way she dives into her work. She researches her subject matter in order to really capture the essence of what she's painting. For Shanny, these orchids became characters, each with different personalities. This is the kind of process that really makes a complete work of art. I was doing some logo design in the car on the way to Arkansas today and Aaron suggested I play around with a new logo for twine and twig. I made an amazing discovery... ampersand = bird. Since the name "twine and twig" was inspired by a line from Spoonful of Sugar, I thought a robin would be the best choice. I think I'll name him Bert after Dick Van Dyke's character.

This weekend was a beautiful weekend for working out in the yard. I got our flower beds cleaned up and we finally had some time to fill our flower boxes. We had some dusty miller at our wedding. It's one of my favorites and I love the way it contrasts with the dark leaf plants. I also planted some basil and cilantro. It's doing pretty well so far. Can't wait to cook with it!

My husband, Aaron just spent some time in Florida recording some new tunes. He'll release an EP sometime this summer and so I've been working on some T-shirt ideas. Aaron is passionate about the concept of Ubuntu. It's a South African word that translates into the term "I am because we are." This is sort of what inspired the idea of the different profiles. We've had a lot of friends send us pictures of their profiles. (some of you might recognize your head on the t-shirt) We want to include every profile we get in the final artwork for the EP putting this concept of Ubuntu into action. Aaron's mom, otherwise known as Susanna, is hosting a couples' shower for some friends and asked me to do the invite for her. She'll be serving a Mexican dinner and I wanted to add a little Mexican flavor without the use of sombreros or cacti. This flaming heart came to mind. My grandmother lived in Mexico for a while and I remember her sending us "milagros" or in English "miracles". They're sort of like good luck charms for good health. The images of the heart sometimes had flames coming out. I've had a hard time finding one meaning for the flaming heart, but to me it says PASSION! Perfect for a couples' shower right? Anyway, Susanna just let me run free with this one and I had a lot of fun with it.

oh... and the background for this shot is some awesome wallpaper I found a while back at a thrift store. Amazing!

I recently had the opportunity to work on a typographic solution for Texas Monthly Magazine. An old friend from school knew that I liked to experiment with stitching in my design. He had a pretty good idea of what he wanted and I sent him what was meant to be a "rough draft" of different colors and stitching ideas... well they loved it the way it was and didn't want me to change a thing. Gotta love those happy accidents.

I've started this post a million times, but I can't seem to put into words what Aaron and I experienced last weekend so I'll let him tell you...

"We embarked from Miami on the ship.

Long story short: it was actually pretty fun. We aren't big fans of cruises, and this one was no exception, but we met some really great people.

Got to see my old pal , Brandon.
Got to meet some really cool artists and musicians in the Christian music community.
Made some great friends with Evan (Mandisa's guitar player, and an all-around great dude), Scott (Third Day's road manager), and Jenna (Scott's girlfriend).

Overall, we had a really good experience. And now we are on to the next step in our journey."

POSITIVE & ENCOURAGING

So, I haven't said much about it, mostly to save face, but Aaron and I are leaving early in the morning to go on the K-LOVE Friends and Family Music Cruise. We booked it a few months back in hopes that Aaron could make some contacts in the Christian music world and now we're thinking it was probably the worst idea ever! There's no way out now so we are hopeful that God will somehow work this out for good! Here's the demo we plan to hand out to 25 lucky passengers. Ha! Hopefully passengers with some kind of pull in the music industry. Are we crazy?!

A SECOND COLOR!

I successfully added a second color! A second run is scary because if you screw it up, all the work you did for the first run is thrown away. And I think I'll be throwing a lot of them away. Ha! Needless to say I learned a lot with this second project...

1. Maybe try and find a new drying system.
(or don't let your dog in the basement when you have wet pieces on the floor)

2. Make sure you carve your linoleum block out BACKWARDS!

3. Stamping a block of ink by hand does not work out so well. (this was probably the biggest mistake)

4. Simple Green doesn't work as well on rubber-based ink, however, mix it with a little crisco and the ink magically melts off.

CAN'T WIN 'EM ALL...

Moises Valdés is a master print maker for artists around the world. He creates limited edition prints and displays them in his gallery in Mexico. He explained to me that his gallery had a dutch modern feel and he wanted that style to reflect in the logo. He also said it would make sense for the mark to include his initials. I thought this solution I came up with said it all! This mark creates the "M V", but it also illustrates the process of taking original art and making a print. Little did I know there was another designer working on this with him and unfortunately he went with this.

COOKING LIGHT FOR THE NEW YEAR

I got the December issue of Cooking Light Magazine and I gave this recipe a try. Coconut-curry chicken soup. I love ordering the soup at Thai restaurants and this sounded amazing! Aaron had the idea to garnish with some bean sprouts. Yummy!

ANOTHER SHOW... ANOTHER POSTER

Santa was good to me this year. I am totally set up with all the supplies I need to get busy with this letterpress. Six different colors of ink, linoleum blocks and carving tools. I am so pleased with the way Aaron's profile turned out. This method is definitely going to work for simple images.

The top poster is partly computer manipulated. I added more type and a splash of color.
Come out to the show Friday!

The project on the bottom is going to be the artwork for Aaron's new demo. I'm about to explore the world of registration. AHHH. I'll keep you posted on the progress.

CALENDARS

I'm gonna call this my first real project on the letterpress. So, of course, I learned A LOT!!

First off... 43 calendars = 516 passes through the press! Next time I think I'll give myself more than just one day. Even with the help of my wonderful friends, this took about 12 hours. Good thing I made a HUGE breakfast.

Two: Opaque White ink DOES print white on a colored stock. A couple of people told me that it wouldn't work. They were wrong!

Three: My mini press is better at printing big chunky type. All of the numbers were pretty much smudged beyond recognition. I wont go that small again.

Four: When you have a plate made, it's a thin sheet and doesn't come with backing. Good to know.

Five: Clean up. Simple Green is my new best friend :)

Six: My friends are so creative!!! They all came up with type solutions that were unexpected and innovative!

Everything's finished! I'm really happy with the way everything turned out. It's going to be hard to part with Santa, but I know that my Dad will appreciate it.

I had a hard time with the finishing touches on my stocking. I wanted to to be unique and "me". Luckily a couple of friends at work were selling these hand-made flowers from vintage buttons and fabric (loves me not). It was perfect! They're working on getting a storenvy site up. I'll keep you updated.

My mom recently moved from Lubbock to Fredricksburg and I got to go spend some time there last weekend. Right now she is living in a barn/guest house. It is a beautiful space.

She made this ornament for me. Learned how to cut glass the other day... no big deal.

I also had to snap a shot of one her whimsicles. This one is prickly pear. Again... beautiful! My mother is so stinkin' talented!

Our team has been working so hard the past couple months and this week is our week of rest and renewal. Monday we were treated to Waldo Pizza and a day of research around town. My dear friend, Janette Crawford started a blog a while back "to help shoppers find socially friendly clothing that not only has a low impact on the environment, but also a low impact on human rights." I think it's so cool what she's doing and I have definitely been challenged to think about shopping in a new way. Janette asked me to help give her blog a new look. We sat and talked about what she wanted and came up with a logo. From there we had the idea to reverse the logo out of different images for her header. A quick photo shoot and it was ready to go.

So my husband, Aaron, is a musician, producer, author, illustrator, social worker, the list goes on. Needless to say, I end up doing a lot of design work for his many projects. Our good friend Amanda got married in August. She decided to have a smaller wedding at her most favorite place in the world... her aunt's place in Geneva, Texas. I asked her to describe the scenery there so I could get some inspiration for the invite. One of the things she talked about was the pine trees and I thought that would be perfect! I knew she wanted green and I knew she liked a vintage style. She needed to include a ton of information for her guests, so I came up with this fun format to get it all in there without compromising the design.

Last February I married Mr. Aaron Hale. He proposed in a beautiful field with a Hammerpress poster and a ring with wheat engraved on the band. So, of course, we had a wheat theme for our wedding. Here are the invitations.

Anyone one who knows my Mama (Katherine) knows that she's amazing and I'd like to share with you her latest adventures.

A couple weeks ago she packed up her things and moved to the Texas hill country with dreams of selling delicious gourmet popsicles out of a vintage trailer. She loves the idea of a sophisticated popsicle because it lures the adult in and then reminds them of being a kid again.

She's well on her way to realizing this dream. See, the thing about my mom is that she doesn't settle for the ordinary day-to-day life. She has an idea and she goes after it. She makes things happen! She lives her life as if anything is possible and she has inspired me to live the same way.

Aaron and I went to Jacob's Well on Saturday to check out Ubuntu. It's pretty much a bunch of people who love Africa talking about Africa. This week they brought in a refugee family from Somalia. They shared heartbreaking stories of losing loved ones and losing their home. Aaron and I fell in love with this family and met some other really cool people.

This all reminded me of our trip to Tanzania last summer and I thought I would share this set of cards I designed to raise money.

I've been thinking about, dreaming about what Twine & Twig will one day become... custom letterpress, yummy treats, maybe some flowers? I've been wrestling with logo ideas. Type solutions, handwritten solutions. I've drawn out a plan of what the Twine & Twig store front will look like. I've visualized the overall look and feel of the place. Meanwhile my month old, unused letterpress sits lonely in our dark basement and www.twineandtwig.blogspot.com remains a claimed yet empty site.

Last night a comment from a friend of mine kept repeating over and over in my mind... "Why don't you quit talking about your stupid letterpress and print something already!"

So, I did. The header above is my official first print! I don't totally know what I'm doing and I don't have all the supplies i need, but sometimes you just have to jump in!
